Gardens and Grounds

We are ideally situated in almost seven acres, on the Montgomery Canal just three miles from Oswestry and you are free to wander where you like.

The house is accessed via a long drive from the Maesbury Road and we have ample hard standing parking both outside the house and on the canal side of a large barn.

We have our own fruit and vegetable gardens, a small coppice with a brook running through it and to the rear there is a deep pond, well fenced for safety (please stay on the land side of the fence, we don’t want you to drown) and three extensive grass fields where sheep are grazing. The enclosed courtyard is a suntrap in summer and a delightful place to take afternoon tea.  In the formal gardens there are also places to sit and enjoy the surroundings, in an arbour in the fruit garden or on the surrounds of the ornamental pond with its fountains or on the extensive patio area. Smoking is permitted anywhere in the grounds.

There is a barn used in the running of the property, our chicken live in part and various pieces of equipment and supplies are stored there. Please feel free to wander around but please stay outside as we cannot take any liability should you hurt yourselves.

Our chicken are truly free range, they have the run of the property so you are liable to find them anywhere, even in your car if you leave the door or boot open too long! They are all friendly and some will let you stroke them if you approach them gently. You might see our tabby cat, Pudsey, wandering around or sunning herself, she is very friendly but very wary of people however if you approach her slowly she might let you stroke her and reward you with loud purring and much leg rubbing. The sheep will be in one of the three fields and are, well sheep! Daft as brushes but at least they don't bite and they do a great job of keeping the grass under control..

We have a private access to the canal towpath which is via two gates and a small bridge, which can be slippery when wet so please take care. In one direction the towpath leads to the Navigation Inn and Maesbury Marsh village and somewhat further on, the current end of the canal, it’s not too long a walk. In the opposite direction the path leads to areas of outstanding natural beauty and for those who are dedicated walkers, it eventually reaches Lower Frankton (about 6 ½ miles) where it joins the Llangollen Canal.

Cycling on the towpath is possible and the surface is reasonably good though a bit bumpy in places. Canal fishing is possible by permit, a “Waterways Wanderer Permit” is obtainable from British Waterways on 01938 590079. Our pond can be fished free of charge on a catch and release basis but the fish are not monsters!

Should you want to take a one way walk along the canal we will happily drive you to a convenient starting point so you can “walk home”.
